IMPORTANCE OF VISUAL EFFECTS IN FILMMAKING
Hello
world,
This
world is full of stories, they are all around us, and these stories need to be
told. In order to tell these stories, certain mediums are required, and
filmmaking is one such medium. Filmmaking is a medium where different art forms
and techniques come together. One such technique is Visual Effects. It is the
technique of creating or manipulating imagery, outside the context of live
action shooting. Thirty years ago the
visuals that were not possible to achieve, today they are, all thanks to visual
effects. To achieve certain visuals, without the help of visual effects, would
call for higher costs, would be time consuming, labour intensive, and most
importantly the visuals will look dull on screen. A thing about vfx is, the
best vfx work is unrecognizable. When viewers cannot recognize, if the visuals
on the screen are live action or are done with the help of vfx, that is the
proof of good vfx work. Today every movie produced is touched by the technique
of vfx, regardless of their genre. But why has visual effects become such an
integral part of filmmaking? Why is it so important? To answer these questions,
here are the importance of visual effects in filmmaking.
NEW STORIES CAN BE TOLD
Stories
that could not have been told 30 years ago, is possible to say today, thanks to
vfx. For example- a film like Avatar, would not have been possible to make in
the year 1990, it is only due to advancement of technology, the film was
possible to make. Vfx has given writers and filmmakers the liberty to tell new
stories.
COST EFFECTIVE
If
vfx was not available to filmmakers, they had to rely on production design,
commonly known as art direction. For example- to build a fantasy world, full of
mystical creatures and surroundings, the art director and costume designer
would have to work, in order to build such a theme. This would take a huge
amount of money, cost of properties, costumes, paint, make-up, or for example-
a stadium full of people, would require a lot of extras to be paid. All of
these can be done in a computer screen, in a cost effective manner.
EFFICIENCY
With
absence of vfx, the cost of production would go up, and so would the time. To
build realistic sets would take months of time, whereas with vfx, the time
consumed would be much less.
VISUAL REALISM
Visual
realism is the extent to which an image looks as a photo rather than computer
generated image. Vfx makes images look realistic and makes people believe in
it. Good vfx work is unrecognizable, which means people are not able to decide
if it is a photo or CGI. If vfx was not available, it would have been
impossible to tell certain stories, and most importantly make them look
realistic.
The
world around us is changing, and the way we tell stories, is too. Today, visual
effects has become an integral part of filmmaking. Visual effects adds high
value to the storytelling process, and gives the viewers an experience to
remember. Visual effects artists work in close collaboration with the director
and cinematographer of a film, and today, visual effects artistshave become storytellers in their own rights. If you have a
